There's a cellular modem inside, the same technology smart meters and trackers use. It connects to LTE-M networks directly, so it doesn't touch your router or internet at all.
Really. Five years of prepaid cellular service is built into the $299 purchase price. The device sends a few hundred bytes every half hour, so there's nothing metered and nothing to top up along the way.
A few of them also use their own cellular connection and a backup battery, and they work — that part of the design isn't unique to us. The difference shows up after you buy. They're typically sold with a year or two of service bundled in, then charge around $7 a month to keep going, which lands near $450 over five years. Ours is $299 with five years included and no monthly bill at all. You also don't need an app or an account: current status is on the device's own display, and alerts go straight to your email.
Typically about 20 seconds from the outage to an email in your inbox. If cellular is congested the device keeps retrying on its battery. And if a unit ever goes completely silent, our servers notice on their own — about 40 minutes after its last check-in, because a healthy unit on mains power checks in every half hour.
Some circuits blink several times an hour, and alerting on every one would just fill your inbox. If we see three interruptions within an hour we switch that device to filtered mode — brief blips still get recorded, but we only email you if the power stays out for about three minutes. We tell you in the email when this happens, it turns itself off after a quiet day, and there's a link to opt out if you'd rather hear about every single one.
It checks in frequently at first, then slows down to conserve power during a long outage. You'll get a second email quickly once power returns, with how long it was out.
The device ignores any interruption shorter than 5 seconds. Anything longer gets an alert — unless the circuit has lost power three times within an hour, in which case filtered mode (above) takes over automatically. If you're on a rural line with frequent blips, email support@gridwatchdog.com and we'll tune the filter for your device remotely — it takes effect immediately.
Yes. Each device is completely independent with its own cellular connection and its own name in the alerts. There's no hub, so one failing never affects the others.
The device keeps working — you just renew the cellular service. We'll email you well before the five years are up with a renewal option at a modest one-time cost. There's no auto-billing and no surprise: if you do nothing, we'll tell you before anything stops.
The device reports its power status and outage times, plus what we need to keep it healthy: battery and charging state, cellular signal and network, its SIM and modem serial numbers, data usage, firmware version, and crash reports. It has no microphone, camera or location sensor, and never touches your home network. It's all stored on our servers so we can alert you and help troubleshoot. We never sell it. GridWatchdog is a notification aid, not a life-safety device. Don't rely on it as the only thing standing between a power failure and harm.
Don't use it as your sole protection for refrigerated or frozen medication such as insulin, for medical equipment such as CPAP machines or oxygen concentrators, for sump or septic pumps, for animals that depend on powered heat, cooling or air, or for anything where an outage could hurt someone or destroy something you can't replace. Those situations need equipment designed and certified for the job: a monitored alarm, a UPS with a local audible alarm, or a generator with automatic transfer.
An alert can fail to arrive without warning: if your email is delayed, filtered to spam or bouncing, if there's no usable cellular signal at that outlet, if a long outage outlasts the battery, or if the device or our service fails. Alert timings are design goals, not guarantees. The card in the box carries the full wording.
